Please forgive my absence so soon after we just just met.
I hated to rush off, but we had a little elder-family emergency. The Stay at Home GeekMom is needed right now at the hospital and for chauffeur duty. I will be back Thursday with fresh new reviews and I did update the contests and giveaways page so be sure to check it out!
But I couldn’t just leave you hanging so here’s some news and some tips, and I will continue bring you updates and posts like this as often as possible until then. Please enjoy my other reviews and articles in the mean time.
Before I start I have to doff my hat at Google for their amazing new interactive doodle with special for iOS features! In honour of Jules Verne there’s a SteamPunkish theme on Google today so I hope you like Chrome …. (I couldn’t resist, sorry…) From The Telegraph (UK):iPad and iPhone users who tilt their device can watch the water level move in any direction they wish.
A Word to the Wise about Valentine’s Day and Apps: Don’t forget to either update frequently if you like Valentine’s-themed games and apps (Angry Birds Seasons for all platforms, for example, is sporting pink for the occasion) or read updates carefully if you want to avoid them.
Once you update there is no turning back, just waiting until the next holiday and there will a lot of hearts on icons for a while. Check out the Smurfs game, it’s got not only a new icon, but a big bold warning about disabling in-app purchases…hmmm I wonder why? 😉
Speaking of updates, Cydia (for those who have Jailbroken* devices) has many! Activator, Installous, LibWeather (a great little gizmo – makes your weather icon actually do something) and MyWi 4.0 (yes, your iPhone can be a hotspot) to name a few.
Also the new Cydia Store, has some lovely Love/Valantine’s Themes and browsing for the right one is so much easier with the new layout. Go poke around if you haven’t for a while, they did a great job.
I really don’t like removing Buuf2 with my LockInfo LockScreen and all my Widgets. I want a lockscreen that gives me a little more information than what Earth looks like from space. I have the The Planets ebook for iPad (5 stars!!!) and about 10 other apps, if I am space-travelling and get homesick. Thanks, tho, Apple, I have my towel ready and a Don’t Panic LockScreen too.
(LockInfo gives you live weather, missed calls and voice mail notices, email & Push Notifications, to-do list & multiple calendar reminders, and more on your lock-screen, accessible without a single slide – I promised I could help you trump your Android and Google friends and I meant it.)
What is Buuf2? Well IMO it is the bomb of all themes, it has so many custom icons and just looks so good, but you really should have a peek at the new Themes Section in Cydia and find one that is right for you.
But when I do pink, which is seldom, a classy theme that works on iOS 3.x and 4.x and has never given me problems or lag is Pretty Pink Theme; it’s subtle and not too girly, but pink enough for even the most romantic GeekMom. My screenshot doesn’t do it justice, but it will give you an idea. Make it even more romantic by adding HeartSlider 4.0. Here are some pics the themes, slider and lockscreen mentioned above:
